The Telford suburb of Trench is based around the ancient byway of the Trench Way, a route that existed as early as the late 13th century and connected the towns of Newport and Wellington. Some of the route of Trench Way still exists as Trench Road, but by and large the old byway has been built over, redeveloped, and rerouted around newer developments.
Trench was once the site of an inclined plane, a form of cable railway used on canals for raising or lowering a boat from one height to another. Crafted in 1793, the Trench Inclined Plane was operational until the 1920s, making it the last example of its kind in the UK. Whilst inclined planes are still found throughout the world, the growth of the British rail network led to significant reduction of canal routes to essentially being just for leisure pursuits.
Dalian Atkinson, the former professional footballer whose career covered Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, and Spanish team Real Sociedad, is closely linked with Trench. Although he was born in Shrewsbury, Atkinson grew up in Trench, and also died there in tragic circumstances in 2016. A police officer was found guilty in 2021 of his manslaughter for intentionally using excessive force during restraint procedures while Atkinson was clearly suffering some sort of breakdown.
