Now a notable suburb of Newcastle-under-Lyme, the village of Chesterton has had people occupying it since Roman times, with evidence of a Roman fort being uncovered during several excavations throughout the years. It is not known how long this facility was in use but is thought to have been constructed during the latter part of the 1st century AD.
Chesterton remained largely based around a small agricultural economy until the Holditch Colliery was first sunk in 1912. At its peak, the site was once home to over 1,500 staff and, despite a disaster in 1937, continued producing nearly half a million tonnes of coal until 1990. The site was then extensively renewed, and a large industrial estate is now located on the land where Holditch once stood, between Loomer Road and London Road.
Despite its relatively small size, Chesterton has been the home of no fewer than eight professional footballers, including current Arsenal and England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who was born in the nearby town of Stoke-on-Trent, raised in Chesterton, and in 2021 became the most expensive goalkeeper for the Gunners.
