Situated on the banks on the River Trent, giving the town its full name of Newark-on-Trent, Newark likely has its origins in Roman times, due to its location on the Fosse Way. Early documents have also shown a settlement in the Newark area from Anglo Saxon times, coming under the protectorate of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and his wife Godiva, before the Norman Conquest of 1066.
The remains of Newark Castle still provide a key part of the town’s skyline, although it was slighted in 1648 during the Civil War and left for derelict. It was once a formidable stronghold that played host to royalty, as King John died there in 1216, recorded at the time as being due to a “surfeit of peaches”, but more likely due to dysentery which had plagued him for several days previously.
Since 1984, the town has been twinned with Emmendingen in Germany, Sandimierz in Poland, and the commune of Saint-Cyr-sur-Loire in central France. The National Civil War Centre can be found in the centre of the town, next to the Palace Theatre, one of the key entertainment venues in the Newark area.
The town of Newark has played a key part in the wider history of the UK as well as that of the Nottinghamshire area. With many great facilities, as well as things to see and do, Newark is an increasingly desirable place to live.
