The historic town of Market Harborough is located just inside Leicestershire on the border with the neighbouring county of Northamptonshire. The market that gives the town its name was initially held in 1204 and has been operating weekly since 1221. Many tofts (or yards) exist from where traders used to store goods near the market, although these are no longer used for their original purpose.
Home of the King’s Army during the English Civil War, the forces were later defeated at nearby Naseby by the troops of Parliament. The town was later known as the home of Thomas Cook, the travel pioneer who arranged one of the first organised group trips in 1841 (from Leicester to Loughborough), before giving his name to the company he founded.
Former crisp manufacturers Golden Wonder were based in Market Harborough until 2006. There is a base in the town for Hearst Magazines UK, which deals with publications such as Cosmopolitan and Esquire. The town also acted as part of the setting for “Career of Evil”, a JK Rowling novel written under her pseudonym of Robert Galbraith.
