Like its neighbour Ingoldmells, the village of Chapel St Leonards on the Lincolnshire coast is a location for a number of caravan parks and campsites that make it popular for holidaymakers during the summer.
The name of the village is after an actual chapel dedicated to St Leonard in nearby Mumby, which dates from at least the 14th century. At one point both Mumby and Chapel St Leonards were part of the same parish. St Leonards Parish Church was dedicated to the same French catholic priest has a history stretching almost as far back, with evidence of structures from the late 16th century.
One of the most iconic buildings in the village is the UK’s first purpose-built marine observatory. The North Sea Observatory was first conceived in 2005, but wasn’t built until 2016, with a futuristic look making use of weather-proofing to help it withstand the substantial seaside weather during the winter.
Located on the beachfront, one of the pubs in the village is shaped to look like a moored houseboat, and is named the Admiral Benbow in honour of the famous 17th century naval officer, famed for his exploits in the West Indies.
