Originally known as just Ashby, the second part of the town’s name was added during the reign of Henry III, when it came into the possession of the La Zouche family. Built during the 12th century, the town’s castle was slighted by parliamentarians in 1648 when it became a hotbed of Royalist uprising, in order to prevent it being used for military purposes.
Situated just off of the A511, linking Burton upon Trent to the M1, Ashby de la Zouch is a Leicestershire town near the Derbyshire border that is also twinned with Pithiviers in France. The fictional character of Adrian Mole, created by writer Sue Townsend, was said to have moved to Ashby, and his girlfriend Pandora Braithwaite later became MP for the town.
Calke Abbey, located just to the north of the town, is billed as being an “un-stately home” due to its unique offering from the National Trust. When the Trust acquired the property in 1985, it was decided to preserve the house and estate, rather than restore them. Consequently, it is something of a time capsule, telling the tale of a time in the 20th century when many such houses did not survive, being abandoned, sold or developed into housing.
Rosemary Harris, the actress who played Aunt May in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, was born in the town, while the band Young Knives formed in Ashby, gaining popularity following a move to Oxford and links with both Truck Festival and Transgressive Records.
