Located to the north of Barnsley town, the suburban village of Royston has been around since at least the Domesday Book, when it was recorded as Rorestone, basically being a farm belonging to Hror/Roarr. Although largely agricultural for much of its history, as with much of the wider Barnsley area, Royston developed a thriving mining industry until the 1980s when the local colliery was closed.
Running just East of Royston is the disused Barnsley Canal. Although still a route with water along most of its length, the former canal now resembles a small stream rather than the navigation at the height of its usage, mainly used for transporting coal between 1799 and the growth of the railways in the 1860s.
British mountaineer, explorer and TV presenter Andy Cave was born in Royston in the 1960s. Starting work in the local collieries when the miner’s strike of the 1980s hit, he developed more time for climbing, conducting his first expedition to the Himalayas in 1987.
There is a great selection of local facilities for residents, including a Co-Op, Asda, petrol station, pubs, schools, parks, churches and the Rabbit Ings Country Park, a 64-hectare green space, wildlife conservation area and picnic area, all based on the site of the former colliery.
