A suburban area to the east of Barnsley town, Kendray was developed and named due to Kendray Hospital, an NHS facility that first opened in 1890, when the property was gifted to the town by Mrs Ann Lambert. She was the last surviving daughter of local linen manufacturer Francis Kendray and asked that the hospital be named in honour of her father.
Since the Second World War, much of the original housing in the Kendray area has been demolished, with newer properties going up in their place and the land being redeveloped into other uses. For example, Birk Avenue Park is one of those areas, with a playground and amphitheatre featured prominently in a large green space surrounded by housing.
Kendray has primary and secondary school education provisions, making the suburb a great area for families. The Forest Academy, run by the Wellspring Academy Trust, replaced Kendray Primary in 2013 and has been rated good by Ofsted. Barnsley Academy opened in 2006 and is located next to the Kendray Recreation Ground, although it is arguably closer to the neighbouring suburb of Worsbrough.
Whether you live in Kendray itself or anywhere in the wider Barnsley vicinity, there will be a shutter style to suit your design ideas.
