The village of Great Gonerby (pronounced “Gunner-bee”) is thought to have originated during the Viking occupation of the area, with the settlement named in honour of the tribal chief Gunvar, although the name changed to a more anglicised version during the Georgian era.
Due to the population expansion of Grantham in the 1990s, the separate village of Great Gonerby became nearer and nearer to the edges of the town’s housing estates. Despite maintaining a very independent village atmosphere and social calendar, Great Gonerby is now only separated from the nearby town by around 400 yards.
One of the houses is referred to locally as Cromwell’s Cottage, based on the tradition that Oliver Cromwell based his troops here before attacking Grantham. Although there is no historical proof to verify this local legend, it is widely circulated that he lodged in Pond Street, and evidence of a Civil War era battlefield and encampment on the nearby moorland.
